BRONWYN

Thies-Thompson

SINGER & MUSICIAN | CHANTEUSE & MUSICIENNE

ABOUT

Bronwyn Thies-Thompson is a singer sought after for her solid and inspired performances as a soloist and amongst chamber ensembles, regularly collaborating with the leading early and contemporary music groups in Montreal and abroad, notably with Daniel Taylor’s JUNO- nominated Theatre of Early Music and Trinity Choir. Her “clean and clear voice” (National Capital Opera Society) and “natural and assured musicianship,” (Ottawa Citizen) informed by her musical upbringing as a cathedral chorister and instrumentalist in Ottawa, have been appreciated during collaborations with the Tallis Scholars and Dame Emma Kirkby. Bronwyn has been fortunate to collaborate on new works with a number of Canadian composers including Andrew Ager, Tim Brady, Gabriel Dharmoo and Matthew Larkin. She is also involved in musical collaborations exploring the traditional music of Ireland, England, Appalachia, and Quebec.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH

Bronwyn Thies-Thompson (she/her) is also a first year graduate student, currently pursuing her M.A. in Religions and Cultures at Concordia University in Montréal, Québec. She completed an Honours Bachelor of Music degree with High Distinction at Carleton University in 2017. She maintains a busy performance career, as a singer sought after for her solid and inspired performances as a soloist and amongst chamber ensembles, regularly collaborating in performance and on recordings with the leading early and contemporary music groups in Montreal and abroad. Her academic research is motivated by a desire to interrogate eurocentric conceptions of music and culture, while her nearly 20 year ongoing practice as a church musician inspires and informs her autoethnological methodological approach to her interests. These interests include Anglicanism, Choral Evensong, ambient religion, musical ritual practice, and their intersections with gender and sexuality. Her primary research examines her own musical and cultural upbringing within the Anglican choristership tradition, exploring the perception of and performance of gender and sexuality by the child and adult choristers.
